Iran will respond to possible US attack against its oil tankers: Rouhani

In a telephone conversation with Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warned that Iran will respond to any possible attack by the US against Iranian oil tankers in the Caribbean Sea or anywhere else in the world, Mehe News reported.

According to the reports, five tankers carrying Iranian fuel for Venezuela are approaching the Caribbean Sea and the first vessel will arrive on Sunday.

Iran is supplying about 1.53 million barrels of gasoline and alkylate fuel to Venezuela.

Venezuela’s defense minister said its military will escort the Iranian tankers once they reach the nation’s special economic zone.

Emphasizing that the regional security is one of the most important issues for Iran, Rouhani added: "The United States is responsible for the insecurity in various parts of the world and Iran is not interested to be a part of any regional tension or confrontation."

"We have always had the legitimate right to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity and to serve our national interests, and we hope that the Americans will not make any mistake."

"The United States continues its incorrect behaviors even during the coronavirus pandemic when all the countries are desperately in need to cooperate with each other", Rouhani said.

He added that the security of the region, especially maritime security is provided by the countries located in that region, and Iran has always declared its readiness to cooperate more with our neighbors in this regard.

He also said that political relations with Qatar will improve in the near future.

The Qatari Emir, for his part, said that the development of economic relations with Iran is one of his country's priorities.

"Qatar firmly believes that regional security must be achieved with the cooperation of all countries located in that region, and we as countries in the same region must work together to ensure the security of the waterways," he said.

"Qatar would take initiatives to resolve any regional tension," he added.

In this conversation, both the leaders exchanged greetings on the auspicious occasion of Eid al-Fitr.
