Austria, Poland keen on expansion of relations with Iran

Parliament speakers of Austria and Poland expressed their countries’ willingness to expand relations with Iran.

The two European officials sent separate massages to Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf to congratulate his election as the head of the country’s legislative body, according to IRNA.

Qalibaf, Tehran’s former mayor, was elected as the speaker of the 11th Parliament on May 28.

The President of the National Council of Austria Wolfgang Sobotka expressed hope for the expansion of “friendly parliamentary relations” between Iran and Austria during Qalibaf’s tenure.

In his message, Sobotka highlighted the significant role of the parliaments’ interaction in building trust and deescalating tensions in the world.

Poland's Parliament Speaker Elżbieta Witek also in a message on Sunday congratulated Qalibaf for his election.

She wished success for Qalibaf and expressed hope that friendly relations between the two countries, including parliamentary cooperation, will be boosted more than ever during Qalibaf’s term, Tasnim News Agency wrote.

She also expressed hope that her country would soon be able to overcome the coronavirus crisis and resume its normal parliamentary relations with other countries.

"It is very important that we work with the spirit of international unity in such a difficult situation that we are in the midst of global disease," she said, adding, "I would like to express our full solidarity with the people of Iran, who are deeply involved in this conflict."

The novel coronavirus has claimed the lives of more than 8,800 people in Iran.
