Renewable energy capacity to increase by 500 MW: Deputy minister

A sum of 500 MW will be added to the capacity of renewable energy in Iran by the end of the incumbent government (September 2021), announced a deputy energy minister.

Talking IRNA on Thursday, Mohammad Satakin who heads the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Organization (SATBA) said: "Currently, Iran enjoys a capacity of about 800 MW of renewable energy and projects with the total capacity of 800 MW are under construction."

"In addition to creating jobs and boosting production, reducing environmental pollution, diversifying the energy portfolio and strengthening power grids are among the achievements and benefits of installing renewable power plants," Satakin said.

These 800 MW of installed capacity of the renewable power plants has prevented power fluctuations and also reduced the 470 million kWh of losses in the country's electricity network, he added.

"The operation of these new power plants will also prevent the emission of 45,424 tons of environment pollutants."

One of the Energy Ministry's strategic plans is to provide two percent of the total capacity of power plants in the country through renewable energy, most of which will be solar power plants, the official said.
