The goalkeeper of Iran’s national football team has left Tehran for Brussels, Belgium, on July 13 to join training sessions of the country’s oldest club, ‘Antwerp’.

Ali-Reza Beiranvand, 27 who is also the keeper of Iran’s Persepolis team, will officially join Antwerp after he successfully passes the necessary examinations, IRNA reported.

His travel to Belgium was hindered in mid-June due to the Coronavirus pandemic because he failed to get the necessary permission for the trip while he was at the Imam Khomeini Airport in Tehran.

Beiranvand gained global fame for saving Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, afc.com reported.

He has been chosen as the best penalty-saver of Asia. The best penalty-saver was decided through a #ACL2020 poll.

He represented Iran internationally at the 2015 and 2019 AFC Asian Cups, and at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

In 2017, he was the first Iranian ever to be nominated for an individual award at The Best FIFA Football Awards.

With 23 clean sheets in 37 matches during the 2017–18 season, he ranked as the second goalkeeper in the world for his clear records.
