Iranian striker Mehdi Taremi was named Rio Ave FC’s Player of the Season, Primeira Liga club announced on Sunday.
Former Persepolis striker, 28, who left Qatari club Al Gharafa to join the Portuguese side, scored 18 goals in his debut season to help Rio Ave to a fifth-place finish in the league and a place in next season’s Europa League playoffs.
A memorable campaign saw the Iranian international finish as the joint-top scorer of the Portuguese league – alongside Benfica’s duo Pizzi and Carlos Vinicius.
The top scorer’s award, however, went to Vinicius who scored the same number of goals in fewer minutes of play this season.
Taremi has been heavily linked with a move away from Rio Ave in recent weeks as Premier League side Aston Villa and Portuguese giants FC Porto, Benfica, and Sporting Lisbon are said to be among the clubs interested in his signing.
