They said women should visit a dentist before getting pregnant in order to avoid dental problems as many women endure tooth loss and pain during the period, menafn.com reported.
Dental specialist and a teacher at the Ghazanfar Medical Sciences Institute, Zabihullah Mohmand, talked to Pajhwok Afghan News during an exclusive interview about dental care during pregnancy.
He said women should visit dentists before getting pregnant in order to avoid dental problems in the first trimester, which could lead to the loss of fetus in the last trimester.
Dr. Mohmand said one should brush teeth twice a day (in the morning and at night before going to bed), adding that bleeding gums must be treated before getting pregnant.
He advised a balanced diet regime which should be full of vitamins. “A pregnant mother should eat more and a healthy diet and take care of herself in order to improve her immune system.”
The doctor said there was very low awareness among women about dental problems during pregnancy and the Ministry of Public Health should increase the awareness through media.
A resident of Karta-i-Parwan, a 30-year-old woman, who visited Dr. Mohmand for a check up, said, “I did not know I should visit a dentist before getting pregnant and I also did not know one should not remove teeth during pregnancy.”
