COVID-19 kills 174 more Iranians: Health Ministry

Iran's Health Ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari said on Thursday that the fatal coronavirus claimed lives of another 174 Iranians over the past 24 hours mounting the death toll to 19,162.

Speaking at her daily press briefing, Lari said that 2,625 new cases of infection with the COVID-19 were identified throughout the country in the said period, and 1,246 of them have been hospitalized, IRNA reported.

She added that out of the total 336,324 Iranians who have been confirmed infected with the COVID-19 so far, 292,058 patients have recovered and were discharged from hospital.

Another 3,971 cases of COVID-19 patients are in critical conditions and are being treated in intensive care units, the spokeswoman said.

She added that 2,788,027 tests have so far been carried out in Iran.

Authorities have made wearing masks mandatory in enclosed spaces and reimposed restrictions lifted gradually since April to reopen the country’s sanctions-hit economy.

Iran, the worst-hit country by the coronavirus in the West Asia, reported its first cases in the city of Qom in February.
