The number of coronavirus cases has doubled in the capital Tehran in one week, an Iranian Health Ministry official said on Tuesday.

Deputy Health Minister Alireza Raeisi said that the number of people tested positive for the novel coronavirus increased from 900 to 1,800 in Tehran in one week, according to ILNA.

Whenever compliance with health protocols decreases, the number of new cases begins to increase, he said.

Health Ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari said on Tuesday that 140 more Iranians died from coronavirus disease from Monday to Tuesday, bringing the total death toll 23,453.

According to the ministry’s spokeswoman, 2,705 people tested positive for the coronavirus from Monday to Tuesday, which is the highest number since Aug. 13. She put the total number of new infections at 407,353.

Lari said that of the new coronavirus cases detected since Monday, 1,299 people have been hospitalized.

Some 349,984 people have recovered from the coronavirus infection so far or have been discharged from hospitals in the country, she added.

Among those undergoing treatment in medical centers at present, 3,811 coronavirus patients have critical health conditions, she said, and more than 3,613,891 coronavirus diagnostic tests have been carried out in Iran so far.

Iran has been trying to contain the spread of virus by enforcing social distancing measures and urging people to use mask in public places since the outbreak of the virus in the country in February.
