Ali Akbar Velayati (R), the top advisor to Iran’s Leader, meets with former Iraqi prime minister Nouri al-Maliki in Tehran on September 15, 2020.

Ali Akbar Velayati, the top advisor to Iran’s Leader, expressed hope that under the leadership of the new Iraqi government, politicians in the neighboring Arab country will be able to take great steps in resolving the country’s problems.

Velayati made the remarks after a meeting with visiting former Iraqi prime minister Nouri al-Maliki on Tuesday.

He called Maliki as a friend who worked hard to advance the interests of the Iraqi people, according to Mehr News Agency.

He also described his meeting with this Iraqi official as "very positive".

The Iranian official said that West Asia is under the influence of the fraternal, close, and good neighborly relations between Iran and Iraq.

Velayati also stressed the need for further expansion of relations between the two neighboring countries.

Maliki arrived in Tehran on Sunday night. He held separate meetings with Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani and Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf on Monday.
