Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araqchi and his Russian counterpart Sergei Ryabkov discussed on Thursday Tehran’s initiative for a peaceful settlement of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan Republic over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Earlier in the day, Araqchi arrived in Moscow from Baku where he introduced Tehran’s plan to senior officials of Azerbaijan for putting an end to the worsening conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia, IRNA reported.

Araqchi, as the especial envoy of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, is on a tour to Azerbaijan, Russia and Armenia to present Iran’s regional initiative heading a high-ranking delegation.

Speaking upon arrival at Moscow Airport, the Iranian diplomat said that Iran has put forward that key countries of the region, like Russia, should play a role in resolving the crisis.

Prior to his meeting with Ryabkov, Araqchi exchanged views with Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister for Central Asia and Caucasus Andrei Rudenko.

Iran's Regional initiative includes a ceasefire, discontinuation of attacks on residential areas and civilians, as well as the return of the displaced to their homes, Araqchi said.

Speaking to reporters before leaving Baku for Moscow, Araqchi said he had “positive and constructive” talks with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.

Araqchi said Iran has always opposed the occupation of the territories of the Azerbaijan Republic and supported the territorial integrity of that country.

“Today, in a long positive and constructive meeting, I presented the regional plan of Iran to help end the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan,” Araqhi said adding that Baku welcomed Tehran's initiative.

Nagorno-Karabakh is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan but is populated and controlled by ethnic Armenians.
