President Hassan Rouhani said on Wednesday that the countrys health sector is under intense pressure, expressing hope that new coronavirus restrictions would help the medical personnel take a breath.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, President Rouhani said since the outbreak on coronavirus in the country in February, the countrys health staff have been working hard to treat the patients and now they need to rest, according to IRNA.

Rouhani stressed that there is no shortage of medical equipment in the country but the best way to tackle the deadly virus is to observe the health protocols.

Irans Health Ministry reported 13,421 new coronavirus infections from Tuesday to Wednesday, a new daily record, bringing the country's total number on positive cases to 801,894.

Of the new cases detected since Tuesday, 2,837 patients have been admitted to the hospitals across the country, Health Ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari said.

Lari added that the death toll rose by 480 to 42,941 in the country.

Like many other countries in recent weeks, Iran has been struggling to curb the spread of the disease. The high number of infections and deaths has prompted officials to tighten the restrictions aimed at containing the surge in the number of infections and deaths.

On Sunday, officials announced that severe restrictions” will be imposed in as many as 150 cities with the highest infection rates as of November 21.

As part of the measures, intercity travel will be banned, while nonessential businesses and public places will be closed.

Iran also plans to enforce a nighttime lockdown between 21:00 p.m. and 4 a.m. local time.
