Iran’s freestyle wrestling sensation Hassan Yazdani might be ruled out of the upcoming Individual World Cup, according to ISNA.
The inaugural event is to replace the 2020 World Wrestling Championships in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, after the United World Wrestling called of the December competitions due to “many nations reinstating travel restrictions in response to the COVID-19.”
Iran Wrestling Federation had named four Iranian wrestlers for the new tournament.
Yazdani and Kamran Qassempour were picked to represent the country in the freestyle contests, with Mohammad-Hadi Saravi and Hossein Nouri taking part in the Greco-Roman bouts.
However, ISNA wrote on Sunday that the 2016 Rio Olympics gold medalist will likely miss the tournament “to make room for younger wrestlers and avoid further injuries.”
Yazdani last appeared in an international competition in September 2019, where he claimed a second world 86kg gold in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.
A knee surgery, and then the coronavirus pandemic, sidelined the Iranian for nearly 10 months before he returned to competitive wrestling in early October – representing Bazar-e Bozorg at Iran Premier Wrestling League.
