Zarif once again extended condolences on the passing of the late Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem and emphasized on the continuation of strategic cooperation between Iran and Syria, IRNA reported.
Muallem served as the Syrian foreign minister from 2006 to 2020. He passed away on November 16 at the age of 79.
Mekdad, the former deputy foreign minister of Syria, was appointed as the new Syrian FM on Sunday by President Bashar al-Assad.
The presidency announced in a statement that President Assad also named Syria’s former permanent representative to the United Nations in New York, Bashar al-Ja’afari, as deputy foreign minister. Press TV reported.
