The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) extended the deadline for a verdict on Iran Judo Federation’s appeal against a provisional suspension by the International Judo Federation (IJF) until January 29.

Arash Mir-Esmaeili, the head of Iranian federation, announced the news on Saturday, adding that the Lausanne-based court “probably needs more time to reach a verdict due to the importance of the case.”

The IJF and Iran had been given one month on September 20 by the CAS to settle their dispute.

The IJF had suspended the Iranian federation from “all competitions, administrative and social activities” in September 2019.

Iran’s ban came after the incidents at last year’s World Judo Championships in Tokyo and the controversy surrounding the then Iranian -81kg representative Saeid Molaei.

According to the IJF, the world judo governing body had been informed that during the competitions in the Japanese capital Tokyo, Molaei intentionally lost to his Belgian rival to avoid a potential contest against an Israeli athlete.

Iran firmly rejected the allegations at the time.
