Iranian striker Mehdi Taremi was picked by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) in the Men’s AFC Team of 2022.
Porto frontman has been in flying form for the Portuguese giant this season, scoring 18 goals – including five in the Champions League – in 25 matches across all competitions.
The Iranian also had 26 goals and 17 assists in 48 outings to steer Porto a domestic league and cup double last season.
A total of 39 goals for club and country – including a brace in the 6-2 defeat against England at the World Cup in November – saw the IFFHS name the Iranian as the AFC Best Goal Scorer 2022.
Japan headlined the AFC team of the year with four players – goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda, Maya Yoshida, Takumi Minamino, and Daichi Kamada.
Yoshida was joined by Australian Aziz Behich and Napoli’s South Korean center-back Kim Min-jae in the backline.
Saudi Arabia’s Salman al-Faraj and Hwang Hee-chan of South Korea were selected in the midfield area, while Tottenham Hotspur striker Son Heung-min and Saudi international Salem al-Dawsari, who scored the winner in the famous 2-1 victory over Argentina in the World Cup, completed the front three.
