Navy Cmdr.: Iran among top 10 in building destroyers

Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari has said Iran is among the world's top ten countries capable of building destroyers.

He said this makes Iran a key player both at the regional and international levels, IRNA reported.

The commander noted that in the past, Iran was incapable of even fixing minor problems with its vessels, but now it is able to successfully construct submarines, warships and advanced destroyers.

The Iranian Navy also works on a submarine capable of launching missiles and torpedoes.

The submarine, named Be'sat, which is in the designing phase, will be 60 meters long and has the operational power for undertaking missions at a depth of 300 meters.

Iranian military experts plan to mount six launchers for firing torpedoes and Cruise missiles on the new submarine and equip the subsurface vessel with mine-laying capability.

In recent years, Iran has made major breakthroughs in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in the production of important military equipment and systems. The country's military might pose no threat to other countries and its defense doctrine is based on deterrence.

Iran has so far launched different classes of indigenous advanced submarines, including Fateh, Ghadir, Qaem, Nahang, Tareq and Sina.

The Islamic Republic has also conducted several military drills to enhance the defense capabilities of its armed forces and to test modern military tactics and equipment.
