Iran’s military drill & regional security

Iran’s military drill & regional security

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) conducted major military maneuvers code-named the Great Prophet (PBUH) in the south and the southwestern parts of the country as well as the Persian Gulf region and the Strait of Hormuz. The exercises displayed Iran’s deterrence power and its ability to maintain security and stability in the region.

The drills kicked off on Wednesday with maritime mine operations by speedboats as well as the firing of four coast-to-sea missiles. Twenty new missiles were tested during the military exercises.

The drills also featured other military equipment, including speedboats equipped with naval radars, electronic communications systems, cruise missiles with a range of 25 kilometers, medium-range anti-ship missiles, medium- and large-caliber torpedoes, sea mines, heavy machine guns, rocket-launchers and shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles.  The IRGC also fired coast-to-sea and surface-to-surface ballistic missiles during the drill.

Commander of the IRGC Ground Force Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour said the message of the military maneuvers of the IRGC is ‘peace’ for the friends of the Islamic Republic and destruction for Iran’s enemies.

In the past decades and after the 1980s war between Iran and Iraq, the Islamic Republic has strived to stand up on its own feet and despite military sanctions, it has managed to attain great achievements in the defense industry. The latest drills were an opportunity for the country to showcase its military capabilities and test its defense achievements. They also indicated that the Iranian armed forces have the will and ability to design and produce advanced military equipment without foreign help.

Iran is located in the heart of the strategic Middle East region and its geostrategic situation has turned it into a key highway for trade. After the 1979 Islamic Revolution, certain Western and regional countries mounted pressure on Iran in various political, economic and social domains in order to subvert the Islamic establishment. But the country’s ability to maintain security thwarted their efforts.

No doubt, defensive and security capabilities can help a nation flourish its economy and strengthen its social and political powers.

Tensions and unrest have surrounded Iranian neighbors, but the country has managed to ensure its security against foreign threats and dangers. Tehran seeks to introduce to the world a religious defense doctrine based on which developing and possessing unconventional weapons like atomic bombs is illegal. This is while, the Israeli regime as the sole possessor of nuclear arms in the Middle East every now and then threatens Iran with military action.  Despite its high deterrence power, Iran prefers to have constructive interaction with other countries and seek to have friendly ties with them.

The Middle East has been plagued with wars and conflicts because of foreign interference, Israel’s aggression and extremist groups.  Western countries try to destabilize the region in order to sell their arms to the certain regional countries that spend billions of dollars on weapons.

Iran has always sought cordial relations with its neighbors in order to maintain the region’s security. Based on this policy, it has military cooperation with Iraq and Syria and now that Takfiri terrorists are operating in these two countries, it has increased its cooperation these countries.

The Persian Gulf is the world’s third largest gulf and 40 percent of the world’s oil supplies pass though the Striate of Hormuz. The West is well aware that pursuing a policy of détente with Iran will help bring stability to the global energy market.  Iran can be a key energy route for the world due to its geopolitical situation and help stabilize the region.
