Millions of Iranians pay homage to Imam Khomeini

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei warned against enemy plots to spread discord and create disunity among Muslims, calling on Shias and Sunnis to boost unity to thwart the plots.

"Today, you can see that one of the main policies of the hegemonic powers is (fomenting) discord in the Islamic world," Ayatollah Khamenei said on Thursday while addressing a ceremony marking the 26th anniversary of the demise of Imam Khomeini, the late founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The ceremony was held at the mausoleum of Imam Khomeini with the participation of mourners from across the country, high-ranking Iranian officials and foreign guests and ambassadors.

In his address, the Leader said one of the late Imam's principles was the necessity of countering conspiracies aimed at dividing Muslims.

Ayatollah Khamenei then urged Muslims to strive to enhance unity and stay vigilant against the plots of the enemies, who seek discord in the Muslim world.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Leader referred to standing up against the world's hegemonic powers as one of Imam Khomeini's principles, saying that the late Imam was clearly against the bullying powers and sided with the oppressed.

The Leader highlighted Imam Khomeini's unreserved support for the people of Afghanistan, Lebanon, and Palestine and said the Islamic Republic continues to support the oppressed against oppressors.

Referring to police brutality in the US, he said Iran opposes the violence perpetrated by US police just as the Islamic Republic opposes the acts of violence committed by the ISIL terrorist group.

Ayatollah Khamenei said Tehran also opposes the Saudi military strikes against Yemen in the same way the Islamic Republic opposes the Israeli attacks against Gaza.

The Leader also emphasized that the issue of Palestine will never be off Iran’s agenda.

Every year, millions of Iranians from across the country travel to Tehran to pay homage to the late founder of the Islamic Republic.

Imam Khomeini led Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution which culminated in the overthrow of the Mohammad Reza Pahlavi’s monarchy. Pahlavi was Iran’s last monarch.

Imam Khomeini passed away on June 4, 1989 at the age of 87.
