President underlies protection of people's privacy

President Hassan Rouhani urged officials to adopt appropriate measures to protect privacy of mobile phone customers against unauthorized access, stressing the necessity of legal action against misuse of the issue.

He made the remarks in a meeting of the Iranian Supreme Council of Cyberspace on Saturday, IRNA reported.

The president also stressed the importance of controlling, monitoring and guaranteeing security of country’s infrastructural networks as well as protecting important websites of the country.

According to reports, 20 million MTN Irancell users' data have been recently exposed to the public. MTN Irancell is one of the most popular and second largest mobile phone operator in Iran.

On July 3, Mahmoud Vaezi, Iran's minister of communications and information technology was questioned in Parliament about the incident.

Vaezi said that the initial leak of customers’ data occurred three years ago and was carried out by an employee of a third party organization working with Irancell.
