He made the remarks in a meeting with those involved in census-taking on Tuesday in Tehran, as the country is preparing to conduct its first national online census, the website president.ir reported.
“I call on respected people of our country to fully cooperate with census-takers. No one should feel that these statistics would be used against them, but rather this information will become a basis for correctly planning the country’s future.”
President Rouhani described statistics as a national deposit and a base for the country’s planning.
“Presenting precise information is beneficial to the future of our country and society,” President Rouhani said.
Rouhani added that precise statistics inform us of economic, social and cultural matters, and that is why it is important that we speak and act based on statistics.
“Based on the law, statistics and information should only be announced and presented by the respective authorities, not anyone else,” the president added.
The national census, conducted every five years, provides a snapshot of the living conditions of some 80 million Iranians, detailing their education, income, family background, marital status and so on.
Ashkan Shabbak, head of the supervisory committee on the census, told IRNA on Sunday that he expected 35% of Iranians to fill out the online version of the survey. Those who do not use the Internet will be surveyed in October.
