Behnam Ehsanpour snatched the first gold medal for Iran on the second day of the event in 61 kg weight category. Ehsanpour had to overcome opponents from South Korea and Kazakhstan to reach the final. Ehsanpour beat Kazakhstani wrestler and two time Asian champion Dolat Nyazbakov 9-4. In the final, Ehsanpour went head to head with North Korean Sung Kim and came up victorious 8-6 to be crowned champion.
Iranian 86 kg wrestler Alireza Karimi brought the second gold medal to Iran’s camp after demolishing Kazakhstan’s Dolat Beykov 12-1 in the final. Karimi reached the final in commanding fashion beating Chinese, S. Korean and Mongolian wrestlers.
The last gold medal of the championship went to Iran’s heavy-weight Yadollah Mohebi in the 125 kg final. Mohebi claimed the gold medal overcoming Indian wrestler by a 6-2 score line. Mohebi started his campaign against Chinese opponent and then beat Mongolian and S. Korean wrestlers to make it to the final.
Iran’s 70 kg representative, Hamed Rashidi also won a bronze on the second and final day of the event. Rashidi beat Chinese representative in the first round, however suffered a defeat against Olympic bronze medalist Ekhtyar Nourzaef from Uzbekistan by a thriller 9-8 score line.
Rashidi had to beat S. Korean wrestler to reach the third-place battle. Rashidi beat the wrestler from Tajikistan to claim a consolation bronze medal.
On Saturday and the first day of the event, oReza Ahmadali Atrinagharchi overcame Uzbekistan’s Makhmudjon Shavkatov 8-6 in his first contest of the 57kg weight class in the Indian capital city of New Delhi on Saturday.
He, however, lost to Japanese opponent Yuki Takahashi 2-5 in the next round. The Iranian wrestler then overwhelmed Pinai Nuyson 6-0 by technical fall, and got the chance to feature in the repechage round.
Atrinagharchi defeated Sunggwon Kim from South Korea 5-4 and won the bronze.
Meisam Abolfazl Nasiri picked up another bronze medal for the Iranian freestyle wrestling team in the 65 kg division.
Later in the tournament, Iranian freestyle wrestler Bahman Mohammad Teymouri defeated Tsubasa Asai from Japan 10-0 by technical fall, and received a bronze medal in the 74-kilogram weight category.
Moreover, Hossein Lotfali Shahbazigazvar lost 4-6 to Uzbek opponent Magomed Idrisovitch Ibragimov, and pocketed a silver medal for Iran in the 97 kg class.
Iran was crowned Asian champion, claiming a tally of 71 points in men’s edition.
The Asian Senior Freestyle Wrestling Championship kicked off in New Delhi on May13, and ended on May 14.
The tournament brought together dozens of male and female freestyle wrestlers from various Asian countries, including China, Chinese Taipei, India, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, North Korea, South Korea, Tajikistan, Thailand and Uzbekistan.
