Western and northern provinces of Iran faced heavy snow since Friday night as the country is unprecedentedly suffering from low precipitation and experiencing a prolonged drought.

Provinces of East and West Azarbaijan, Ardebil, Hamedan, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Zanjan, Qazvin, Kordestan, Lorestan, Kermanshah, Kohkilouyeh-Boyer-Ahmad, Gilan, Mazandaran, Markazi and some parts of Alborz and Tehran have been under snowfall.

Roads of 60 villages in western province of Kordeatan have been affected as snow and blizzard continued until Saturday.

According to media, travelers faced severe challenges in reaching their destinations.

Iran’s Deputy Energy Minister Rahim Meidani has recently said this year’s drought is unprecedented in the past 50 years.

Noting that there has been no good rainfall in the current Iranian calendar year, he said the situation in provinces located in arid and semi-arid areas such as Markazi, Qom, Semnan, Tehran, Alborz, and Isfahan provinces is way different than winters of few years ago.
