They were sent pipe bombs; here’s what Trump said about them — and what they said about Trump

A look at the contentious words between the president and some of his most outspoken critics.

One called him a danger to the world. Another said he was drunk on power. A third even refuses to call him the president. This week, packages containing crude pipe bombs were sent to these critics of President Trump and several others.

Trump has his own choice adjectives — crazy, sick, low IQ — for his detractors. He typically reserves one word for perhaps his biggest foe, Hillary Clinton: Crooked.

Here is a list of the people targeted in the bombing campaign, and some of their comments about the president — as well as the president’s comments about them.

George Soros, billionaire Democratic donor

“I consider the Trump administration a danger to the world. But I regard it as a purely temporary phenomenon that will disappear in 2020, or even sooner.”

“In the United States, President Trump would like to establish a mafia state, but he can’t, because the Constitution, other institutions, and a vibrant civil society won’t allow it.”

Remarks in Davos, Switzerland, Jan. 25, 2018

“The very rude elevator screamers are paid professionals only looking to make Senators look bad. Don’t fall for it! Also, look at all of the professionally made identical signs. Paid for by Soros and others. These are not signs made in the basement from love! #Troublemakers”

Hillary Clinton, former secretary of state

“Trump and his cronies do so many despicable things that it can be hard to keep track. I think that may be the point — to confound us, so it’s harder to keep our eye on the ball. The ball, of course, is protecting American democracy. As citizens, that’s our most important charge. And right now, our democracy is in crisis.”

The Atlantic, Sept. 16, 2018

“I guess that’s why she lost. She doesn’t get it. She never did. I knew that a long time ago. Hillary never got it. That’s why she lost.”

Remarks at the White House, Oct. 9, 2018

Former President Barack Obama

“It did not start with Donald Trump. He is a symptom, not the cause. He’s just capitalizing on resentments that politicians have been fanning for years.”

Speech at the University of Illinois, Sept. 7, 2018

“How low has President Obama gone to tapp [sic] my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!”

John O. Brennan, former CIA director

“The fact that he’s using a security clearance of a former CIA director as a pawn in his public relations strategy I think is just so reflective of somebody who, quite frankly, I don't want to use this term maybe, but he's drunk on power. He really is, and I think he’s abusing the powers of that office.”

The Rachel Maddow Show,” Aug. 17, 2018

“When the full extent of your venality, moral turpitude, and political corruption becomes known, you will take your rightful place as a disgraced demagogue in the dustbin of history. You may scapegoat Andy McCabe, but you will not destroy America...America will triumph over you.

Twitter, March 17, 2018

“Has anyone looked at the mistakes that John Brennan made while serving as CIA Director? He will go down as easily the WORST in history & since getting out, he has become nothing less than a loudmouth, partisan, political hack who cannot be trusted with the secrets to our country!”

Twitter, Aug. 18. 2018

Representative Maxine Waters, a California Democrat

“We don’t know what damage has been done to these children. All that we know is they’re in cages. They’re in prisons. They’re in jails. I don’t care what they call it, that’s where they are and Mr. President, we will see you every day, every hour of the day, everywhere that we are to let you know you cannot get away with this.”

Rally in Los Angeles, June 23

“Congresswoman Maxine Waters, an extraordinarily low IQ person, has become, together with Nancy Pelosi, the Face of the Democratic Party. She has just called for harm to supporters, of which there are many, of the Make America Great Again movement. Be careful what you wish for Max!”

Twitter, June 25, 2018

Eric H. Holder Jr., former attorney general

“We have the opportunity to send a message to the present occupant of the White House. I never call him the president.”

Speech at Human Rights Campaign National Dinner, Sept. 15, 2018

“It is time for us, as Democrats, to be as tough as they are, to be as dedicated as they are, to be as committed as they are. What Michelle would say is that, you know, when they go low, we go high. No. No. When they go low, we kick ’em.”

Rally in Georgia for Stacey Abrams, the Democratic candidate for governor, Oct. 7, 2018

“He’d better be careful what he’s wishing for, that I can tell you. He better be careful what he’s wishing for.”

— “Fox & Friends,” Oct. 11, 2018

Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr.

“Let me tell you, he’s a joke.”

CNN, Feb. 6, 2018

“A guy who ended up becoming our national leader said, ‘I can grab a woman anywhere, and she likes it.’ They asked me if I’d like to debate this gentleman, and I said, ‘No.’ ‘If we were in high school, I’d take him behind the gym and beat the hell out of him.’”

Speech at the University of Miami, March, 21, 2018

“Crazy Joe Biden is trying to act like a tough guy. Actually, he is weak, both mentally and physically, and yet he threatens me, for the second time, with physical assault. He doesn’t know me, but he would go down fast and hard, crying all the way. Don’t threaten people Joe!”

Robert De Niro, actor

“[Expletive] Trump!”

Tony Awards, June 2018

“Our baby-in-chief ... has put the press under siege, trying to discredit it through outrageous attacks and lies.”

National Board of Review, Jan. 10, 2018

“Robert De Niro, a very Low IQ individual, has received too many shots to the head by real boxers in movies. I watched him last night and truly believe he may be “punch-drunk.”

“Wake up, Punchy!”

Twitter, June, 13, 2018

James R. Clapper Jr., former director of national intelligence

“I really question his ability to be — his fitness to be — in this office. I also am beginning to wonder about his motivation for it — maybe he is looking for a way out.”

CNN, Aug. 23, 2017

“‘Clapper lied about (fraudulent) Dossier leaks to CNN’ @foxandfriends FoxNews He is a lying machine who now works for Fake News CNN.”

Twitter, April 28, 2018

Tom Steyer, billionaire Democratic donor

“Mr. Trump has been meeting the grounds for impeachment from the day he walked into this office — led by corruption, which is in the Constitution. It is the so-called emoluments charge, which says the president cannot take any payment whatsoever from a foreign country which he, of course, does virtually every day.”

NPR, Aug. 29, 2018

“Wacky & totally unhinged Tom Steyer, who has been fighting me and my Make America Great Again agenda from beginning, never wins elections!"
