The JCPOA was signed in July 2015 between Iran and P5+1. On May 8, US President Donald Trump pulled Washington out of the deal and reimposed unilateral sanctions in two phases — both already in place — on the Islamic Republic, IRNA reported.
In his sixth report on the implementation of Resolution 2231 of the UN Security Council endorsing the JCPOA on Iran’s peaceful nuclear program, he said the deal was approved by the resolution as a major multilateral diplomatic achievement.
Guterres described the deal as a basis for establishing peace across the globe and guaranteeing regional and international security.
The UN chief also maintained that issues irrelevant to the JCPOA should be dealt with within a separate atmosphere.
He also welcomed Tehran’s compliance with the terms of the Iran nuclear deal, describing the US pullout from the JCPOA as a challenge faced by the agreement.
The Iranian people’s interest are required to be safeguarded within the framework of the deal, said Guterres, calling for the immediate activation of the special purpose vehicle (SPV) by Europe.
The special purpose vehicle is a payment mechanism proposed by the European Union with the intention of protecting trade with Iran in spite of US sanctions.
