Iran’s coach Carlos Queiroz released the 23-man list for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup which will kick off in the UAE on January 5.
The Portuguese received further blows to his aspirations of winning the Asian trophy with holding midfielder Ali Karimi and Charleroi’s winger Ali Qolizadeh being ruled out of the continental competition due to injury.
This setback came a day after Iran lost the services of its first-choice defensive midfielder Saeid Ezzatollahi.
Brighton’s Alireza Jahanbakhsh, who has also been dealing with a hamstring injury, was named in Queiroz’s final squad.
Iran will face Qatar in its final preparation fixture in Doha on December 31 before flying to the UAE.
The three-time Asian champion will kick off its campaign in the Group D opener against Yemen in Abu Dhabi’s Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium on January 7.
Iraq, the Asian champion in 2007, and Vietnam are the other two teams of the group.
