Iran’s Ambassador to Iraq Iraj Masjedi held a meeting with France’s Ambassador to the Arab country Bruno Aubert as tensions between Iran and the United States have increased in recent weeks.

During the meeting which was held at the Iranian Embassy in Iraq’s capital Baghdad on Sunday, both sides reviewed a host of issues, including the US provocations and threats against Iran and Iraq as well as spreading propaganda by the US and some Arab countries about growing insecurity and threats in Iraq, according to IRNA.

The meeting came days after the Iranian envoy held a meeting with Britain’s ambassador to Iraq.

Earlier on Sunday, Iran’s ambassador held a separate meeting with Iraqi President Barham Salih.

The two sides stressed the necessity for constructive dialogue among regional countries to deescalate tensions and boost stability in the region.

The meeting came against the backdrop of increased tensions between Iran and the US with Washington imposing sanctions hampering Tehran-Baghdad relations.

The US has ratcheted up pressure on Iran since last year after withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Since then, the administration of US President Donald Trump is trying to reduce Iran’s oil exports to “zero,” and has sent an aircraft carrier strike group, a bomber squad, an amphibious assault ship, and a Patriot missile battery to the Middle East to try to stack up pressure on Tehran.
