UNWTO hails Iran’s actions during coronavirus pandemic

In a letter to the Iranian Minister of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts, and Tourism Ali-Asghar Mounesan, the head of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Zurab Pololikashvili praised Iran’s actions in terms of tourism since the outbreak of COVID-19.

He also invited the country to attend the 112th session of the Executive Council to be held in Tbilisi, Georgia, September 15 to 17, IRNA wrote.

Pololikashvili praised the Iranian government’s constructive efforts in curbing the coronavirus and said that the set of measures and actions taken by the Iranian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts in accordance with UNWTO guidelines and recommendations was effective in reducing the impact of the crisis on tourism.

“Among all sectors of the economy, tourism has been hit hardest and the devastating impact of this crisis has had a heavy impact on people’s livelihoods and UNWTO’s efforts to achieve sustainable development goals,” he said.

Pololikashvili said, “As we are witnessing a slow and cautious reopening of the world, domestic tourism will be a pioneer in this path. In this regard, it is gratifying that the activities of UNWTO, led by the World Tourism Crisis Committee, have been useful for Iran’s Tourism Ministry in restarting tourism activities in a safe, integrated and responsible manner.

He added that the UNWTO will provide all possible assistance in supporting these efforts.
