Iran’s coronavirus death toll nears 19,000

Iran's Health Ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari said on Wednesday that the coronavirus claimed the lives of 188 more Iranians from Tuesday to Wednesday, bringing the total death toll to 18,988.

Speaking at a daily press conference, Lari added that 2,510 new coronavirus cases were detected during the same period, IRNA reported.

She noted that 333,699 Iranians have been confirmed infected with the COVID-19 so far.

Among those undergoing treatment in medical centers at present, 3,940 patients have critical health conditions, Lari noted.

She also noted that at least 290,244 patients have recovered from the coronavirus infection so far or have been discharged from hospitals across Iran.

On Tuesday, Irans Deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi announced a 25% decrease in the number of coronavirus-related hospitalizations in the country as a result of observing health protocols by people.

New figures in recent weeks have shown a significant decrease in the number of deaths and infections from the coronavirus across the country.

Authorities have made wearing masks mandatory in enclosed spaces and reimposed restrictions lifted gradually since April to reopen the countrys sanctions-hit economy.

Iran, the worst-hit country by the coronavirus in the West Asia, reported its first cases in the city of Qom in February.
