Khatibzadeh told IRNA that Iran’s interest section in Cairo was informed by Egyptian police and foreign ministry that the Iranians have been rescued by Egypt’s navy forces earlier this week when their vessel, heading to Europe from Turkey, developed a technical failure in the Mediterranean Sea.
They are now in Marsa Matruh port in northwest of Egypt to complete their quarantine period, Khatibzadeh said.
He added that the Egyptian police further said on Tuesday that the rescued Iranians were being transferred to the capital city of Cairo.
Unfortunately, none of them had ID cards while referring to Iran’s interest section but their identities were compatible with documents in Egyptian foreign ministry, Khatibzadeh said.
Iran appreciates humanitarian measure taken by Egyptian government and navy with regard to rescuing 57 passengers on board of the wrecked vessel 29 of whom were Iranian, said the spokesman.
