Iran will construct 3,956 kilometers of roads and railways, worth about $5.7 billion, by the end of the next Iranian year (March 20, 2022), said Deputy Roads and Urban Development Minister Kheirollah Khademi.

According to the official, over 3,400km of new railways are under construction across the country, of which eight projects, with a length of 1,560km, are the ministry’s priority, according to iribnews.ir.

Meanwhile, in the road sector, 1,345km of freeway and 7,800 km of highway are also under construction.

Khademi pointed to the Khaf-Herat railway, the Tehran-Qom-Isfahan railway, and the Isfahan Eastern Freeway as some of the major projects underway by his ministry.

The official noted that the Khaf-Herat railway project will be inaugurated in the near future.

“The Iranian side was ready to put this route into operation in November, but due to the unpreparedness of the Afghan side, the operation of this route was postponed,” he explained.

“This route has the capacity of transporting three million tons of goods,” the official said.
