A first-half penalty gave defending champion Persepolis its first victory at the new Persian Gulf Pro League campaign against San’at Naft Abadan on Saturday.

Siamak Nemati kept his cool on a rain-soaked Azadi Stadium pitch to convert the spot-kick in the 43rd minute after Reds’ defender Hossein Kan’anizadegan was brought down in the box.

Other Saturday game between Paykan and Shahr Khodro was suspended while goalless midway through the first half due to a heavy rain pouring in Shahr-e Qods, west of Tehran.

Friday’s fixtures saw Esteghlal suffer a first defeat under new manager Mahmoud Fekri as Foolad Khuzestan beat the Tehran-based Blues 2-1 at home.

Brazilian Luciano Pereira Mendes scored from the spot in the 90th minute to complete Javad Naekounam’s men’s comeback after a Farshad Ahmadzadeh’s header canceled out Voria Ghafouri’s penalty in the second half.

In Rafsanjan, Nigerian striker Godwin Mensha scored a second-half double as Amir Qalenoei’s Golgohar Sirjan overcame Mes Rafsanjan 2-0 to become the only team to keep a 100 percent record after two rounds of play.

A late drama saw Mashinsazi and Zob Ahan play to a 1-1 draw in Tabriz.

Substitute Peyman Babaei gave Mashinsazi the lead with 10 minutes left from the normal time before Abdollah Hosseini scored an 89th-minute equalizer.

On Thursday, Sepahan legend Moharam Navidkia celebrated his first victory as the new manager of the Isfahan-based club with a 1-0 home win over newly-promoted Aluminium Arak.

Sajjad Shahbaz-Zadeh scored the sole goal of the game.

Tractor head coach Alireza Mansourian will have to wait for a first win in the new role after his side settled for a 1-1 draw at Nassaji Mazandaran.

Ayoub Kalantari broke the deadlock for the home side in 69th minute before Hamid Bouhamdan scored for the visitors with eight minutes to go.

Naft Masjed Soleyman and Saipa also played to a 1-1 draw, courtesy of a goal by Sassan Hosseini for Naft and a Hossein Maleki equalizer for Saipa.
