Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad al-Busaidi on Sunday in a phone call to his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif condemned the assassination of a top Iranian scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, noting that terrorism is an unacceptable and heinous act in any form.

Al-Busaidi extended his condolences to the Iranian government and people over the assassination of the Iranian prominent nuclear scientist on Friday by suspected Israeli-tied elements, IRNA reported.

On Saturday, foreign ministers of Qatar, Syria, and the chief of Hamas Political Bureau also offered their condolences over Fakhrizadeh assassination in separate phone talks with Zarif.

Fakhrizadeh, 59, was assassinated after being seriously wounded when assailants targeted his car and engaged in a gunfight with his bodyguards in Absard, a town just east of the capital Tehran.

The scientist, who headed the Defense Ministry’s Research and Innovation Organization, succumbed to injuries after medics failed to revive him.

The body of the assassinated scientist was taken to several revered Shia Muslim shrines ahead of his burial set for Monday.

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Sunday urged the international community to condemn an act of “state terror” that led to the assassination of a senior Iranian nuclear scientist.

Zarif tweeted in German that the international community, particularly the European Union, must “abandon its shameful double standards.”

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei on Saturday urged definitive punishment of those behind the Fakhriadeh assassination.

"Follow up on this crime and certainly punishing the perpetrators and those ordered it, and ... continue the scientific and technical efforts of this martyr in all of the fields he was working in,” Ayatollah Khamenei ordered the Iranian authorities.
