‘Spotlight on Italian Cinema’ in Iran resumes online screenings

‘Spotlight on Italian Cinema’ in Iran resumes online screenings

‘Spotlight on Italian Cinema’, an exclusive initiative by the Italian Embassy in the Iranian capital of Tehran, will be online until December 5.

The initiative was relaunched on Tuesday, after an almost 10-month hiatus, according to a press release obtained by Iran Daily from the Italian Embassy in Tehran.

It was launched last February in three Iranian cities of Tehran, Kish and Shiraz; but was interrupted after three days due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The program features a selection of some of the most significant Italian contemporary movies.

The initiative is taking place only online on the interactive platform in cooperation with Istituto Luce-Cinecittà and Iran’s ‘Art and Experience Cinema’ institute.

The online screenings enable a potentially unlimited Iranian public to watch Italian films directly from home, on an evening of their choosing between two available dates (December 1-5) and at no cost.

The movie selection opened on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. (Tehran Time), with the screening of a video message by the Italian Ambassador to Iran Giuseppe Perrone, followed by written remarks by Managing Director of Art and Experience Jafar Sanei Moqaddam.

The opening ceremony will be followed by a unique selection of Italian contemporary art movies, which have been awarded major international recognitions.

The movies include ‘Happy as Lazzaro’ by Alice Rohrwacher, winner of the best script award at the Cannes Film Festival (2018); ‘Where the Shadows Fall’ by Valentina Pedicini, presented at the 74th edition of Venice Film Festival (2017); ‘The Path of Oil’ by Bernardo Bertolucci, restored in 2007 and winner of Golden Lion for the last 75 years of the history of cinema at the Venice Film Festival (2007); ‘Martin Eden’ by Pietro Marcello, presented at the 76th edition of the Venice Film Festival (2015); ‘My Mother’ by Nanni Moretti, screened at the Cannes Film Festival (2015).

The screenings are accompanied by exclusive masterclasses by Rohrwacher (‘Lazarus Happy’), Tiziana Lo Porto (‘The Path of Oil’) and George Gosetti (‘Where the Shadows Fall’).

The initiative follows the Italian Embassy’s participation in the European film week in Iran in early November, with the screening of Fellini’s movie ‘The Clowns’, on the occasion of the centenary of the Italian director’s birth, and a masterclass by Gianfranco Angelucci, viewed by over 2,000 users.
