“Today is an unforgettable day for the two neighboring countries,” President Rouhani said after officially inaugurating the Khaf-Herat railway project, IRNA reported.
The Iranian and Afghan presidents inaugurated about 140 out of 225 kilometers of Khaf-Herat railway project that was accomplished by over 430 billion tomans.
According to Iran’s Roads and Urban Development Minister Mohammad Eslamithe, the country has invested over $666.6 million for the completion of the Khaf-Herat railway project which includes four phases.
About 77 km of the project, which includes two phases, is in Iran's soil and the rest in Afghanistan.
The 222-kilometer-long Khaf-Herat is a part of the Iran-Afghanistan rail corridor started in 2007-2008, the project connects Iran’s eastern city of Khaf to neighboring Afghanistan’s western city of Herat.
Iran has three cross-border transit roads in northeast and east of the country with Afghanistan through which it can facilitate the land-locked country's access to the outside world.
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, for his part, referred to Khaf-Herat railway as a historic plan and crucial for trade and economic development.
