Iran will play a must-win encounter against Bahrain at the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Tehran, according to Arabic sport website which cited a Bahrain Football Association official.

The Asian qualifiers for the main event in Qatar have been halted since March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Bahraini official has told the website that his country will play Iran at Tehran’s Azadi Stadium on June 7.

Should the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) confirm the report, it will be a major boost for Dragan Skocic’s side as multiple sources had suggested in recent months that the Asian football governing body will opt to resume the qualifiers in a centralized format next March.

Iran currently sits third in Group C of the qualifiers with six points, trailing group leader Iraq and Bahrain by five and three points – albeit with a game in hand.

The Asian powerhouse got off to flying start in the group beating Hong Kong 2-0 before thrashing Cambodia by 14 goals at home.

However, a couple of consecutive defeats against Bahrain (1-0) and Iraq (2-1) saw Iran’s bid for a third successive qualification for the World Cup hanging in the balance.

The below-par results and performance in the latter two fixtures forced led to Iran parting ways with Belgian manager Marc Wilmots last February.

Eight group winners plus best four runners-up will progress to the next round of the qualifiers.
