Iran supports Afghan gov't, Constitution: Deputy FM

Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Abbas Araqchi reiterated Iran’s support for Afghanistan in separate meetings in Kabul with his Afghan counterpart Mirwais Nab and the National Security Adviser Hamdullah Mohib on Saturday.

During his meeting with Mohib, the Iranian diplomat discussed bilateral issues, security, and the peace process in Iran’s eastern neighboring state, IRNA reported.

He also emphasized Tehran's support for the government and Constitution of Afghanistan.

Moreover, in the meeting with his Afghan counterpart, Araqchi expressed hope that the comprehensive long-term cooperation document between the two countries will be finalized and ready to be signed soon.

The Afghan diplomat, for his part, appreciated Tehran its long term and continuous hosting of Afghan refugees and its support for Afghan peace talks.

He also congratulated the two neighboring countries on the inauguration of the Khaf-Herat railway with the participation of the presidents of Afghanistan and Iran.

The project was officially inaugurated by President Hassan Rouhani of Iran and his Afghan counterpart Ashraf Ghani on Thursday.

The 225-km railway project includes four phases that are currently under construction. About 78 km of the project, which includes two phases, is on Iran's soil and the rest in Afghanistan.

Nab described the project as an important step towards strengthening and expanding relations between Kabul and Tehran.
