Mehdi Taremi delivered a Man-of-the-Match performance to help FC Porto to a ninth consecutive victory at the Primeira Liga on Friday.
The Iranian international scored a second double in three outings and won a spot-kick as the Portuguese champion beat Famalicão 4-1.
It took the 28-year-old striker 13 minutes to break the deadlock when a Jesus Corona’s low cross found the Iranian before his cool side-footed effort went in off the home side keeper Vaná.
Jhonata Robert equalized for Famalicão from the spot seven minutes later but another penalty saw Porto restore the lead through Sergio Oliveira after Taremi was brought down by Vaná in the 31st minute.
Taremi doubled the visitor’s lead right before the hour mark.
Vaná’s clearance of a corner-kick fell into Otavinho’s path as the Brazilian’s first-touch cross was headed home by Taremi into the back of the net.
Substitute João Mário sealed the victory with one minute left from normal time.
“I have to thank my teammates for their contribution to my goals,” Taremi said after the game.
Taremi, who scored 18 for Rio Ave last season to finish joint topscorer of the Portuguese league, found it hard to break into the starting 11 early in the season but is now the club’s second topscorer with six.
“It took me a little time to settle in at Porto, which is a normal thing in professional football,” said Taremi after the match.
“But my condition is much better compared to my time in Rio Ave as I find more scoring opportunities in Porto,” added the Iranian.
“I always want to be a part of the team’s success. We finished another match without a defeat and now it’s time to take the lead in the table.”
The victory leaves Porto in the second place of the league with 31 points – equal on points with Benfica and four adrift of Sporting.
