FC Porto’s Iranian international Mehdi Taremi was named Primeira Liga’s Best Striker of the Month in December.
Taremi, 28, collected 20 percent of the votes by the league managers to surpass Marítimo’s Rodrigo Pinho and Paulino of SC Braga for the award.
The Iranian, who left Rio Ave in the summer to join the Portuguese champion, scored three goal in four outings for Porto during that period, including a double in a 4-1 victory over Famalicão last Friday, where he also won a penalty for Porto’s second goal of the game.
The Primeira Liga’s announcement was followed by another stellar performance by the Iranian during a 4-2 victory at Nacional on Tuesday night in Taça de Portugal, the Portuguese domestic cup competition.
Goals from Bryan Rochez and Brayan Riascos had seen the home the home side to fight back to take a 2-1 lead, canceling out a Luiz Diaz’s opener for Porto.
With two minutes left from normal time and Porto desperately looking for an equalizer, Taremi came to the rescue as his inch-perfect pass went through Nacional’s backline and found Evanilson, whose low effort forced the game into extra time.
Sergio Oliveira gave Porto the lead in the 102nd minute, before Taremi sealed the seal the 15th victory in 16 matches for the Dragons with five minutes left on the clock, tapping in from close range.
