Three Iranian films garner Dhaka accolades

Three Iranian films received awards from the 19th Dhaka International Film Festival (DIFF) in Bangladesh, held January 16-24.

Iranian film, ‘Careless Crime,’ directed by Shahram Mokri, won the Best Screenplay Award at the Competition Section; ‘Sunless Shadows,’ by Mehrdad Oskouei, was named the Best Documentary in the Spiritual Section; and ‘Tirishko,’ by Shakiba Khaleqi, won the Best Short Film Award in the Women Filmmakers Section.

Nassim Ahmadpour and Mokri, who wrote the screenplay of ‘Careless Crime,’ received the Best Screenplay award, IRNA reported.

‘Careless Crime’ goes back to 40 years ago, during the uprising to overthrow the Shah’s regime in Iran, when protesters set fire to movie theaters as a way of showing opposition to Western culture.

Mokri’s film won the Best Original Screenplay award at the International Film Critics’ Week (SIC) during the 77th Venice International Film Festival. The film was an entry to the Orizzonti section of the festival, which is dedicated to films that represent the latest aesthetic and expressive trends in international cinema.

It has also been accepted into the 2020 edition of Viennale Film Festival in Austria.

DIFF is a biennial film festival held in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Established in 1992, the festival was initially organized on an annual basis but has become a biennial event since 1995. DIFF is one of the most prestigious film events in Bangladesh, dedicated to introducing mainstream global cinema to local filmmakers as well as to promoting healthy cine culture within Bangladesh.

The 19th DIFF, organized by Rainbow Film Society, was held at the Alliance Francaise de Dhaka, Star Cineplex, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Central Public Library Auditorium and Bangladesh National Museum Auditorium.
