Terror operation foiled in NW Iran

A terror operation in the southern parts of West Azerbaijan Province, in northwest of Iran, has been foiled by the country’s Ministry of Intelligence cooperating with provincial security forces, a ministry statement said on Wednesday.

According to the statement, two members of the terrorist team that had plans to carry out an assassination operation were killed in a clash with the security forces on Tuesday afternoon, IRNA reported.

It added that the team was affiliated to a terror group based in northern Iraq.

The team was to implement a terror attack in the provincial city of Piranshahr, located near Iraqi borders, read the statement. It added that two Kalashnikov machine guns, grenades, and other ammunition were seized from the terrorists.

Earlier on Wednesday, Tehran Police Chief Brigadier General Hossein Rahimi said that a terrorist, planning to cause insecurity and disturbance in one or two centers near the Iranian capital, was arrested at Tehran-Qom toll gateway earlier this week.

According to a report by Iran’s Mehr News Agency, the armed terrorist was carrying a vest as well as incendiary material including suicide bomb and was leaving Tehran threatening a driver with his gun when he was arrested at the toll gate and handed to the judicial authorities later.

Brigadier General Rahimi said the driver has provided valuable assistance to the police officers.
