Iran stresses commitment to Iraq’s stability

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said he has emphasized Iran's commitment to Iraq’s stability in a meeting with his visiting Iraqi counterpart Fuad Huseein.

"Good meeting with Iraqi FM @Fuad_Hussein1. Discussed expansion of ties & regional & international cooperation," Zarif tweeted on Saturday referring to his meeting with the Iraqi minister of foreign affairs.

"I welcomed Iraq's constructive efforts for regional security, stressed Iran's commitment to Iraqi stability & rejected destabilizing US aggression against Iraqi forces," he added.

However, according to a Foreign Ministry statement, Zarif also commented on a series of recent attacks on the Iraqi soil, stressing that the attacks are suspicious and could have been carried out to disrupt Tehran-Baghdad relations as well as Iraq's security and stability, IRNA reported.

“We stress the need for the Iraqi government’s action to find the perpetrators,” the top Iranian diplomat said about a recent attack on the airport of Erbil, which killed one foreign civilian contractor and wounded several others.

On Thursday, the US military carried out airstrikes on facilities in Syria’s eastern province of Deir ez-Zor in what it called a response to the Erbil attack.

Zarif condemned Washington’s “dangerous” decision to target the Iraqi forces at a border region inside Syria, saying the illegal strikes have violated the sovereignty of that country.

He also warned that the recent suspicious moves are aimed at souring relations between Tehran and Baghdad, Tasnim News Agency reported.

The visiting foreign minister, for his part, expressed Iraq’s readiness to expand relations with Iran in various fields.
