The foundations of trade relations between Iran and Europe should not be affected by cross-border sanctions, said the director general of the Western Europe of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Addressing the Iran-Europe Economic Forum on Monday, Peyman Sa’adat said, "The value of trade between Iran and Europe has decreased from €21 billion in 2017 to €4.5 billion," Mehr News Agency reported.

He said this is due to US unilateral withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and its reimposition of harsh sanctions on Tehran, adding many European companies have left Iran over the past two years.

He listed the three principles of diplomacy, resilience and cooperation as the main foundations for development of trade relations between Iran and Europe.

The online Iran-Europe Economic Forum started on Monday. Over 3,000 participants attended the three-day forum, which is aimed at preparing the ground for expanding the country’s trade, scientific and technological cooperation and increasing its non-oil exports.
