Six Tokyo Olympics quotas will up for grabs when Iranian wrestlers take part at the three-day Asian Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament in Almaty, Kazakhstan, starting Friday.
A place in the final bout of every weight class will secure a spot in the Summer Games for all participants.
Mohammad Bana’s three-man squad – comprising Mohammad-Reza Geraei (67kg), Hossein Nouri (87kg), and Mohammad-Hadi Saravi (97kg) – will battle at the Greco-Roman contests, with Amir-Mohammad Yazdani (65kg), Younes Emami (74kg), and Mohammad-Hossein Mohammadian (97kg) representing Gholam-Reza Mohammadi’s team at the freestyle event.
Iran has already booked five tickets for next July’s Games, which were postponed by a year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Iranian sensation Hassan Yazdani secured the slot by winning the gold at the 2019 World Wrestling Championships in Nur-Sultan, the capital of Kazakhstan, with Reza Atri (57kg) and Yadollah Mohebbi (125kg) making it to Tokyo with last-four finishes in the world meet.
Alireza Nejati (60kg) and Mohammad-Ali Geraei (77kg) finished their campaigns in Nur-Sultan with a couple of bronze medals and will be present in the Games, while in the 130kg division Amir Qassemi Monjezi reached the semis to qualify for Tokyo.
