Boosting economy, foiling sanctions Parliament’s top priorities: Speaker

Strengthening the domestic economy and minimizing the negative impacts of US unilateral sanctions are the Iranian Parliament’s main priorities in the new calendar year, which started on March 21, said the speaker of the legislative body.

Speaking at a session on Monday, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf added research programs, scientific studies and a review of the functions of the Parliament’s committees have led the lawmakers to the conclusion that the two main priorities in the new year would be working on economic issues and minimizing the adverse effects of the sanctions, Tasnim News Agency reported.

“This topic will be our main criterion. We will transparently provide people with a report of our activities,” he added.

Qalibaf said a plan is being drawn up for changing the present approach toward granting permits for activities in the domestic business and production sectors in a special committee focusing on boosting the country’s production, which will be finalized soon.

On March 20, in a televised speech to mark the beginning of the new year, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei praised Iranian people’s victory in the face of the enemy’s so-called maximum pressure campaign, and designated the new calendar year of 1400 (March 2021-March 2022) as the year of “Production: Support and the Elimination of Obstacles” .

On Sunday, Qalibaf said the signing of the 25-year comprehensive strategic partnership agreement between Tehran and Beijing is a serious warning to Washington, according to IRNA.

He added that the deal makes the US realize that international relations are changing rapidly to its detriment and, thus, Washington is no longer in a position to unilaterally impose a model, program or agreement on independent states.

Qalibaf proposed that the same models can be used for improving strategic relations with other countries, particularly neighbors.

He stressed that the agreement provides a general roadmap for expanding relations between Iran and China and future plans are required to turn the document into tangible cooperation in different fields, particularly the economic sector.
