The National Taskforce for Fighting Coronavirus in Iran ordered the closure of all sports complexes and gyms in the capital Tehran due to a rising number of the COVID-19 cases in the country.

On Tuesday, the Health Ministry reported 17, 430 of new cases in the country for the past 24 hours, 174 of which were fatal.

The ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat-Lari said 88 cities have entered the “red area”, with another 139 classified in the orange zone.

Red is the highest category in the country's virus risk ranking.

Reza Khorram, a Sports Ministry official in Tehran, said, “As Tehran has entered the red area, some 3,000 of sports facilities and public pools will be closed in the capital until further notice.”

However, the Iran Football Federation has decided to still go through with the upcoming Persian Gulf Pro League fixtures in Tehran.

Second-placed Persepolis is to play Nassaji Mazandaran at the Azadi Stadium on Thursday, while Paykan will take on Golgohar Sirjan next Monday.
