MP slams French envoy for meddling in Iran affairs

An Iranian lawmaker lashed out at the French ambassador in Tehran for interfering in the Islamic Republic’s internal affairs and comments about the purpose of the negotiations on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Speaking on Sunday, Alireza Salimi, a member of the Iranian Parliament’s Presiding Board, warned French Ambassador in Tehran Philippe Thiebaud not to meddle in the domestic affairs of Iran, Tasnim News Agency reported.

“The ambassador of France has said ‘we would bring the Vienna and the JCPOA negotiations to their conclusion so that we’d be able to interfere in Iran’s elections’. Such interventionist comments do not match Mr. Ambassador,” the lawmaker added.

Earlier this week, the JCPOA Joint Commission held a four-day round of talks in the Austrian city of Vienna, attended by representatives of Iran, Russia, China, France and the UK.

The US has been absent from the commission and its discussions since 2018, when former American president Donald Trump pulled Washington out of the JCPOA and reimposed the unilateral sanctions, which had been lifted under the nuclear accord, on Iran.
