The dossier of Shah Abbasi Caravanserai, located in district of Qotur in Khoy, West Azarbaijan Province, has been prepared for submission to the UNESCO for global registration, said director-general of the province’s Cultural Heritage, Handicraft and Tourism Organization.

Jalil Jabbari added that the historical caravansaries of 24 provinces of the country have been identified by the Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicraft Ministry for the global registration, reported.

He noted that efforts are underway by the organization to include Khan Caravanserai of Khoy and Oil Company Caravanserai of Urmia in the list as well.

The official said that the organization has managed to determine the boundaries of 40 historical buildings and 15 ancient sites of the province over the past few years.

“Meanwhile necessary steps have been taken for national registration of the historical monuments located in West Azarbaijan Province”, Jabbari said, adding nine intangible and six natural heritage properties of the province were registered on Iran’s National Heritage List in the last Iranian year (ended March 20).

He said one of the challenges faced by the organization is issuance of permits for repairing the buildings located within the boundaries of historical sites of the rural areas, adding special measures must be undertaken to solve the problem.

The caravanserais are one of the most important form of Persian architecture that emerged and created cause of routes development and needs related to the travel’s demands and requirements.

The ancient Iranian people tried to make the roads across the country safe for trade and delivering letters or news. This was only fulfilled by building special type of inns for travelers called caravanserai. On the roads, caravanserais were built on a distance that a caravan could travel in a day. Also, caravanserais were built inside cities too for travelers.
