The new phase of a national plan, named after late Iranian commander Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani, to cut the coronavirus transmission chain and increase the interdisciplinary coordination in Iran began on Sunday with new services being provided as part of it, said the health minister.
In an address to a joint online meeting of the Iranian universities of medical sciences and commanders of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) on Sunday, Saeed Namaki added the new services to be provided as part of the plan are increased supervision over the chain of transmission in the country, accelerated public vaccination (using both foreign and domestic jabs) against COVID-19 as well as more organized isolation of the infected, all of which are to be done in cooperation with Iran’s Basij voluntary forces, IRNA reported.
Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani, the commander of Iran's Quds Forces, was assassinated by the US outside Baghdad International Airport on January 3, 2020.
Namaki noted that in this plan, the new cases of infection will be identified through screening people house by house, saying less crowded places will be selected for quarantining and taking care of the patients and vaccinating people.
The minister added for those individuals who are not capable of coming for vaccination in person, the capacity of Basij voluntary forces will be used.
He said despite the pressures of the mutated strain (UK variant) of the virus on the domestic health sector, “we are at the peak of the fourth wave of infections and about to witness a downward trend in the number of deaths and infections”, recalling that the UK strain paralyzed Europe within two weeks, sending patients wandering about from hospital to hospital.
“At present, we are proudly past the fourth peak of COVID-19 infections. Although the virus was more pathogenic and infectious in the fourth wave and the number of hospitalizations was 2.5 times higher than what it was in the third wave, the death toll has been half the figure in the previous peak.”
The implementation of Martyr Soleimani Plan began in late November 2020.
