Iranians sealed a couple of quotas for the boating competitions at the Tokyo Olympics.

Ali Aqa-Mirzaei booked his ticket for Tokyo after winning the men’s single kayak 1,000m contest at the Asian qualifiers, also held in the Japanese capital, in 3:36 minutes.

In the rowing qualifiers, Nazanin Malaei stood second in the women’s single sculls with 7:50.53 minutes, trailing Japan’s Shiho Yonekawa, while in the men’s single sculls, Bahman Nasiri also finished runner-up in 7:08.98 minutes.

The host’s Ryuta Arakawa won the contest in 7:01.59 minutes.

Both Nasiri and Malaei will be eligible to take part in the Olympics, as top five in each rowing singles categories will be handed a place in the July’s Games.

However, according to Olympic regulations, each country will only be granted one slot in the single sculls competitions, meaning the Iranian federation will have to choose between the two for a place in the country’s squad in Tokyo.
