Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Tuesday that Iran and Italy are in agreement over the resumption of trade ties.

“In talks with Italian political & business leaders, [we] agreed on Italy's great advantage in resuming business with Iran,” Zarif tweeted after separate meetings with Italian officials in Rome.

The top diplomat said he had “excellent meetings” with Italian Lower House Speaker Roberto Fico, Chairman of the Italian Senate’s Foreign Affairs Committee Vito Petrocelli and the head of the Iran-Italy Chamber of Commerce among others.

In his meeting with Fico, Zarif expressed Iran’s interest in boosting political and economic cooperation.

Fico, for his part, stressed the importance of exchanging parliamentary delegations between the two countries.

Zarif, during his meeting with Petrocelli, pointed to the 160-year history of relations between Iran and Italy, saying there are opportunities for economic cooperation between small and medium-size enterprises of the two nations.

He also stressed the need to remove the obstacles and prepare the ground for a new era of economic cooperation between Tehran and Rome.

Petrocelli highlighted the significance of relations with Iran and expressed Rome’s willingness to broaden parliamentary cooperation with Tehran.

Zarif arrived in Rome on Sunday on the second leg of his tour of Europe to hold talks with Italian and Vatican officials, following a visit to Spain, where he discussed mutual issues, regional cooperation and international developments with Spanish officials.

On Monday, he met his Italian counterpart Luigi Di Maio in Rome to discuss the expansion of mutual ties and international cooperation in areas of common interest.

Zarif said he had a “wonderful audience” with Pope Francis in Vatican City and met Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Foreign Minister Archbishop Paul Gallagher.
